About SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union
Since our founding in 1934 as Orange County Teachers Credit Union, we have been singularly focused on one thing: providing world-class personal service and financial security to our Members.

Although we offer similar products and services as other institutions, our structure and culture are vastly different. Banks are for profit, while credit unions are Member-owned financial cooperatives. We take to heart the 'people helping people' philosophy, the principal on which credit unions were founded. We support the communities we serve through events, donations, scholarships, and financial literacy programs.

We serve school employees and their families across the state of California. As the largest education-based credit union in the U.S., and 5th largest credit union by asset size, our financial stability can be attributed to one thing: providing our Members with world-class personal service to help them better their financial lives.

About Us
A Proud History: Help When You Need it Most

In the midst of the Great Depression in 1934, 126 school employees pooled $1,200 to form the Orange County Teachers Credit Union. It provided safety and security for its Members, when they needed it the most.

Through the depression, wars, recessions, great booms and a financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, the Credit Union remains a beacon of hope for Members and their families. Reflecting our geographic expansion, we changed our name to SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union in 2008, and today have over 60 branches.

Free When Possible, Low Fee When Necessary

As a financial cooperative, our excess earnings are returned to our Members in the form of better rates and lower fees. Whenever possible, we don’t charge a fee for our services, like free coin-counting machines in branches, free checking, free Online and Mobile Banking, 28,000 fee-free ATMs through the CO-OP Network, and no balance transfer fees or cash advance fees on our credit cards.

In the few instances when we do charge fees, you’ll find they’re significantly lower than other financial institutions.

It’s Your Money, It’s Your Credit Union

Every Member has a vote in electing a voluntary Board of Directors who leads the credit union by making decisions in the best interest of Members, giving you a say in how your money is handled.

Members deposit their money into the credit union, and the money helps other Members who need loans. Today’s saving Member often becomes tomorrow’s borrowing Member, and many Members are both savers and borrowers. It’s Members helping Members when you need help, whether it’s buying a home, financing a car, or getting a credit card.

Our Commitment to the Community

We believe school employees—as well as the educational community and credit unions as a whole—deserve our active support.

Scholarships and grants made by SchoolsFirst FCU and the Education Foundation for Orange County Schools help students and teachers finance their education and create enriching classroom programs.

Our Legislative Advocacy ensures you understand proposed laws that affect you as a credit union Member, and how you can communicate with legislators on issues that are important to you. Grassroots outreach efforts have the greatest impact on legislators, and can help us have a voice in both Washington, D.C. and Sacramento.

People Helping People: Eight Decades of Keeping Our Commitments

From hundreds of school employees who made deposits and received loans in the 1930s, SchoolsFirst FCU has grown into a full service financial institution that helps over 1 million Members organize and integrate every part of their financial lives, with outstanding, competitively priced products and services that help you every step of the way.

Because Membership is strictly limited to school employees and their immediate family, we’ve developed a unique set of products and services, from a no-interest loan for teachers to purchase supplies for their classroom, to a higher-dividend savings account to set aside money for the summer months, to loan payment deferrals for school employees affected by furloughs or layoffs.
